FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION: Saturday, 15th August.  This feast is a Holy Day of Obligation and there will be two parish Masses:

8:30am Carmelite Monastery;
9:00am Sacred Heart.

Two of our parish schools will be celebrating this feast as follows:

Our Lady of the Assumption School – Thursday, 13th August, 9:15am Mass at Hoon Hay
Sacred Heart School – Friday, 14
th August, 9am Mass at Sacred Heart

Please note there will be no Mass at Hoon Hay on Friday 14th August.

 MARCH FOR LIFE CHRISTCHURCH:  12pm Saturday, 15 August—Cathedral Square: The march ends in Victoria Square followed by a service and will be closed around 2:00 – 2:30 p.m. with four (4) verses of the national anthem sung.


On Saturday 15th August, our parish will be praying the Rosary at Sacred Heart Church at 4.00pm. You are most welcome and encouraged to attend, to pray for life and faith in our country. Many parishes throughout New Zealand are praying the Rosary on this day.

END OF LIFE CHOICE ACT Q&A WITH BRENDAN MALONE: Brendan has spent the last 14 years in pro-life, marriage, and family ministry and regularly speaks on bioethics issues throughout NZ and Australia.  Wed 12th August doors open at 7.15pm, q&a from 7.30pm – 8.45pm at Our Lady of Victories Hall, 106 Main South Rd, Sockburn.  Drinks & nibbles provided. Bring your questions. All welcome!

PRAYER VIGIL – in the hope that NZ upholds the Christian values as outlined in the Word of God and rejects the End of Life Choice Act. Come and join us in prayer on Sat 22nd Aug 3pm – 10pm at St Teresa’s Church, 8 Puriri St, Riccarton.   All welcome.

PLANNED GIVING ENVELOPES FOR HOON HAY PARISHIONERS: If you would like your planned giving envelopes left at Hoon Hay church, please put your name on the list in the church foyer.

ORDER OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS – OCIA (formally RCIA) Are you wanting to be a Catholic?  Just Curious about Jesus or the Catholic Church? OCIA is a programme which gives adults a pathway to become a  Catholic if they wish. We are holding an enquiry evening On Wednesday 19th August, 7.00pm at Sacred Heart Hall, in the meeting room. NEW ENTRANT ENROLMENTS OLA:  New entrant enrolments for 2021 for Our Lady of the Assumption School close on 18th September.  If you have a child turning five next year and you would like to enrol them, please contact the school office on 338 9503 to arrange enrolment before the closing date.


This year’s Catholic Men’s Breakfast will be held on 3 September at the Canterbury Club, 129 Cambridge Terrace.  The Bishop will speak about Bringing Faith to Life – a faith centred approach to family, business and leisure. This event is an excellent opportunity for Catholic and non-Catholic men to get to know the Bishop, network and encourage one another in common values.

 Parish APP:

Our Lady of The Assumption mobile App has been renamed to The Catholic Parish of Christchurch South.  This is a tool to send alerts about funerals and other church activities. To access  the App go to the App store on your Android or iPhone device and search for ChurchAppsNZ to download the App onto your device. Search for the name of our church  “ The Catholic Parish of Christchurch South”.  Once you have selected the church name you will be asked to sign up for alerts. Choose the ones that you want to know about.

DEACON TANG PHAN ORDINATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD: Deacon Tang will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday 22nd August, 11am at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. All are welcome. For further information please see the Diocesan notices.

THE CRAFTY CREW is starting again! Would you like spend an afternoon crafting with others? You are invited to the Hoon Hay Church Hall, 89A Sparks road, Hoon Hay 1.30-4pm Saturday 22nd August 2020.  Come and meet, and work alongside, other crafters from the Christchurch Parishes.
